When You Feel Unwanted | Pastor Nathan Derenski
Rejection is one of the most universal human experiences, yet it remains one of the most painful. This message takes us on a profound journey through three distinct spheres of rejection that Jesus himself experienced during his earthly ministry. We discover that even the Son of God faced rejection from his own family in Mark 3, who thought he was out of his mind despite his perfect life. He was rejected by those who witnessed his miracles firsthand in Luke 8, where mourners actually laughed at him before he raised a young girl from the dead. And perhaps most heartbreaking, he was rejected by the very people he came to save, as expressed in Matthew 23:37 when he laments over Jerusalem. What makes this exploration so powerful is the revelation that rejection isn't just emotional—it's neurological. Studies show that our brains process rejection in the same regions that process physical pain, which explains why being rejected by a parent, losing a job, or experiencing divorce can feel so devastating. Yet Jesus shows us a radically different way to respond. Rather than retreating into isolation, retaliating in bitterness, or resigning in defeat, Jesus responded with invitation, love, and perseverance. He didn't allow rejection to become resignation. Instead, he looked at those seated around him and declared them his true family. This message challenges us to shift our focus from those who have rejected us to those God has placed in our lives right now. The empty seat left by rejection can become an open invitation for the relationships God wants to bring into our future.
