Fit For A King | Pastor Nathan Derenski
This powerful message challenges us to examine our response to the birth of Christ by exploring three distinct reactions found in Matthew 2. We encounter King Herod who rejected the newborn king out of fear for his own power, the chief priests and teachers who possessed all the knowledge but ignored the fulfillment of prophecy happening mere miles away, and the Magi who traveled 800 miles across the desert to worship him. The sermon asks us to honestly assess which response mirrors our own: Do we reject Jesus when his lordship threatens our control? Do we ignore him despite knowing the truth, claiming busyness or promising we'll get to him 'someday'? Or do we bow low in worship, acknowledging him as the conquering king over every area of our lives? The gifts the Magi brought—gold, frankincense, and myrrh—weren't baby shower presents but royal tributes recognizing Jesus as prophet, priest, and king. This Christmas, we're reminded that Jesus isn't just a baby in a manger but the Ancient and Future King storming the beaches of human history to reclaim stolen territory. The question isn't whether we appreciate the Christmas story intellectually, but whether we're willing to surrender our kingdoms to his. Sometimes the greatest gifts are the ones we don't fully appreciate in the moment—and Jesus Christ is the gift like no other, the conquering king who brings light to darkness, peace to chaos, and salvation to all who believe.
